Washington State warns of heavy traffic and ferry crowds for Labor Day weekend

Residents and visitors across Washington should brace for crowded roads and busy ferries this Labor Day weekend, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The agency is pausing most highway construction projects to help ease congestion, but it still expects delays on several key routes and ferry routes.

Highway congestion expected

WSDOT identified the most heavily trafficked corridors for the holiday weekend. Expect the greatest congestion on U.S. 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass, Interstate 90 between North Bend and Cle Elum, and two stretches of Interstate 5: from Lacey to Tacoma and from Bellingham to the Canadian border. These segments are likely to be busiest from 9 a.m. until early afternoon each day.

Travelers are urged to allow extra time, stay alert, and consider alternative routes when possible. The agency’s website provides detailed travel charts that show peak traffic periods for each corridor.

Construction updates

While most construction is on hold, the Revive I‑5 project over the Ship Canal Bridge will remain in place, reducing the bridge to two lanes. Additionally, the Harvard Avenue on‑ramp to northbound I‑5 stays closed through mid‑October, and express lanes operate only on the northbound side.

Ferry ridership at record levels

Washington State Ferries anticipates roughly 400,000 passengers boarding ferries over the weekend, marking the busiest summer season since 2019. Saturday, September 5, is projected to be the peak day. WSDOT advises drivers with vehicles on board to use the WSDOT mobile app or the ferry system’s website before heading to terminals.

“Prepare for long lines and extended wait times,” the agency said. “To reduce or eliminate waiting, riders should consider early‑morning or late‑night sailings or using transit to walk or bike onto the ferry if possible.”

Fire safety reminders

Fire danger remains high across the state, and WSDOT reminds travelers to prevent roadside fires by not discarding lit cigarettes, avoiding dragging towing chains that can spark, and steering clear of dry grass with hot exhaust systems. If a brush fire is spotted and emergency crews are not present, callers should dial 911.

“If traveling near active wildfires, stay alert and up to date on closures as winds can shift quickly,” WSDOT warned.

By planning ahead, using real‑time traffic tools, and following safety guidelines, Washington motorists can help keep the holiday travel smoother for everyone.
