A recent NFIB Washington Small Business Economic Trends report reveals that Washington small businesses are underperforming the national average on key economic health measures. The report’s Small Business Optimism Index for Washington is 94.5, four points below the national average of 98.5. Plans to increase employment stand at just 5.3% in Washington, compared to 15.4% nationally.
Key Challenges
Washington small businesses rank labor costs as their second biggest problem, with 19% of owners naming it their single most important problem. This is more than double the national rate of 8.5%. Government regulation and taxes are also significant concerns, with 14.9% and 20.2% of owners citing them as major issues, respectively.
The report’s findings are a warning sign for Washington small businesses, which employ roughly half of the state’s private sector workforce. NFIB Washington State Director Patrick Conner emphasized that policymakers should take action to reduce regulatory complexity, moderate labor cost mandates, and provide meaningful tax relief to improve the environment for small businesses.
