Washington County Judge Race: Deree and Shepard Discuss Cameras, Data Centers and Housing

Washington County voters will choose a new county judge on Nov. 3. Democrat Dana Deree and Republican Tim Shepard sat down with 40/29’s Yuna Lee to explain how they would handle public‑safety technology, data‑center development, and the county’s housing needs.

Flock safety cameras

Both candidates said the automated license‑plate readers used by Flock cameras raise serious privacy concerns. Deree acknowledged that the tools have helped solve crimes, but he wants a “very strong case” from county attorneys and law‑enforcement before allowing broader use, fearing potential civil‑rights violations. Shepard, a former law‑enforcement officer, called the technology a trade‑off between public safety and personal privacy, warning that a network of AI‑enabled cameras could expand unchecked over the next decade.

Data‑center regulation

Data centers are a growing issue in Northwest Arkansas, and both candidates want tighter controls. Deree warned that large industrial plants could raise energy costs and strain water supplies, urging the county quorum court to adopt “very strong protections” for rural communities. Shepard agreed that the unknown impacts require heavy regulation now, insisting developers must clearly explain benefits and that land‑use decisions should reflect resident preferences.

Housing, infrastructure and growth

Both candidates agree Washington County needs more housing at a range of income levels, but they stress that growth must be matched by roads, bridges, wastewater systems and water supplies. Deree emphasized protecting the county’s rural character and avoiding unchecked sprawl. Shepard pointed to water shortages that could limit new subdivisions and criticized the county’s past planning efforts as “very poor,” calling for better coordination of housing, water and road projects.

Looking ahead

The race will replace current Judge Patrick Deakins, who was defeated by Shepard in the Republican primary runoff. Voters will decide which vision—Deree’s emphasis on strong legal safeguards and rural protection, or Shepard’s focus on privacy and stricter data‑center oversight—will guide Washington County’s future.
