Warwick Police Department officers made a significant weapons seizure on October 30 at the Motel 6 located at 20 Jefferson Boulevard. Officer Nathaniel Gray, who was on patrol around the property, observed a black 2013 Volkswagen Touareg with its engine running and a lone man standing beside the open car door.
Arrest and Discovery
The man, identified as James Gordon Price Jr., 40, of Keysville, Virginia, told Officer Gray he was “spreading the word of Jesus Christ” and claimed the vehicle belonged to someone named Moses Gabriel – a name that did not match the registration. The car’s registration had expired in January, confirming the discrepancy.
When Officer Gray asked the suspect if he was checking in, Price replied that he was actually checking out. As the conversation continued, the suspect closed his car door, prompting the officer to suspect an attempt to conceal something inside the vehicle.
Illegal Weapons and Ammunition
A search of the vehicle uncovered four illegal semi‑automatic rifles, six high‑capacity magazines, and roughly 500 rounds of ammunition. All of the firearms and magazines are prohibited under Rhode Island law without the proper permits. The weapons were immediately seized and entered into evidence.
In addition to the weapons, officers found a dog in the suspect’s possession. The animal was taken to the Warwick Animal Shelter for care and placement.
Officer Gray’s Remarks
Officer Gray noted in his report that the Motel 6 location has been a hotspot for criminal activity, stating, “There is a large volume of criminal activity at the Motel 6 and I have made a large amount of arrests for various criminal offenses at this location.” The arrest adds to a growing list of law‑enforcement actions aimed at curbing illegal firearms trafficking and related crimes in the city.
Community Impact
The seizure underscores the importance of vigilant policing in protecting Warwick residents from the dangers posed by illegal weapons. By removing the firearms and ammunition from the streets, the department is helping to maintain public safety and deter future illegal activity in the area.
Warwick Police continue to encourage anyone with information about illegal firearms or other criminal behavior to contact the department. The investigation remains ongoing, and further charges may be filed pending the outcome of the case.
Next Steps
James Gordon Price Jr. has been booked into the Warwick County Jail and is awaiting a court appearance. The seized weapons will be held as evidence, and the dog will remain at the animal shelter until a suitable home is found.
Residents are reminded that the Warwick Police Department is committed to keeping the community safe and will continue to act decisively against illegal firearms and other threats to public safety.
