Walmart reports $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and plans price cuts

Walmart disclosed that it will receive roughly $2.9 billion in refunds for tariffs paid on imports during 2025 and early 2026. The refund, one of the largest ever reported by a single company, helped the retailer post net income of $6.4 billion for the quarter ending July 31, a figure that, while lower than the prior year, exceeded analysts’ expectations.

How the refunds are being used

Company officials said the money will be directed toward “customer experience and price investments,” meaning the retailer intends to pass savings on to shoppers through lower prices and enhanced services. Walmart also raised its full‑year guidance after factoring the refunds into its financial outlook.

Other retailers see similar refunds

Walmart is not alone in receiving large tariff refunds. Target reported a $994 million refund, while home‑improvement chains Home Depot and Lowe’s received $730 million and $80 million respectively. TJX Companies, the parent of TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods, disclosed a $331 million refund.

Beyond retail, several technology and logistics firms have reported refunds. Apple said it collected nearly $2.2 billion, and FedEx and Amazon each received $800 million and $640 million respectively. Both FedEx and Amazon said they will return a portion of those funds to customers who directly bore the tariff costs, with FedEx launching an online portal for the purpose.

Legal background

The refunds stem from a February Supreme Court decision that ruled former President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariff program illegal. In May, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began issuing refunds from the $168 billion collected from roughly 330,000 importers. By July 31, CBP had distributed about $100 billion, according to a court filing.

While the CBP is required to refund the importers of record, some companies, such as Costco, face class‑action lawsuits from consumers seeking a share of the refunds they believe they indirectly paid through higher prices.

Impact on consumers

Most companies have not detailed how the refunds will affect individual shoppers, though several indicated the funds will support promotions and price reductions. Apple plans to allocate its refund toward investments in U.S. operations, while other firms have signaled similar intentions.

Overall, the influx of tariff refunds is expected to provide a modest boost to consumer purchasing power as retailers translate the windfall into lower shelf prices and enhanced shopping experiences.
