Walmart assures shoppers digital shelf labels won’t use personal data for pricing

Walmart is addressing growing consumer concerns about its rollout of digital price labels by pledging that the technology will not use personal information to set prices. In a statement posted on the company’s website, CEO John Furner affirmed that the retailer will not base prices on a shopper’s income, shopping history, or willingness to pay, now or in the future.

CEO’s promise on pricing fairness

“We don’t set different prices based on who you are or the time of day, and we won’t,” Furner wrote on Friday. “Whether you’re buying groceries or electronics on a hot afternoon or in a sudden rush for an item, it’s never a reason to charge you more.” The promise extends to Walmart’s artificial‑intelligence shopping assistant, Sparky, which the company says will also be prohibited from raising a customer’s price or hiding lower‑priced alternatives.

Why digital shelf labels matter

Digital shelf labels replace traditional paper tags with electronic displays that can be updated instantly from a central computer. Walmart says the system improves price consistency, matches checkout totals, and reduces labor costs by eliminating the need for employees to manually change paper tags. The retailer reported that, as of March, 2,300 U.S. stores already use the technology and expects it to be deployed chain‑wide within the next year.

Price changes still possible

Furner clarified that while the new system will not personalize prices, prices can still rise or fall for ordinary business reasons. “We lower prices when we can pass savings along, or sometimes raise them because an item costs more to buy or to transport,” he said. This aligns with Walmart’s longstanding “every day low prices” model, which relies on volume and efficiency rather than individualized pricing.

FTC warning on personalized pricing

Last month, the Federal Trade Commission issued a bulletin reminding companies that using personal data to set prices could violate consumer‑protection laws. The agency does not have authority to ban personalized pricing outright, but it warned that firms must disclose how any personal information influences price decisions. Walmart’s statement appears to be a pre‑emptive response to that guidance, reinforcing the retailer’s commitment to transparency.

Consumer and law‑maker reactions

Consumer‑advocacy groups and some lawmakers have expressed skepticism about the rapid adoption of digital shelf labels, fearing the technology could enable price discrimination. By publicly committing not to use personal data, Walmart hopes to allay those concerns and maintain trust among shoppers who value the chain’s reputation for low, consistent prices.

Looking ahead

As digital pricing technology spreads across the nation, Walmart’s pledge may set a benchmark for other retailers considering similar upgrades. The company’s emphasis on fairness and transparency reflects a broader industry trend toward leveraging technology while preserving consumer confidence.
