Vice President JD Vance delivered a direct warning to Iran, stating the United States will continue to counter maritime attacks with military force following a resurgence of hostilities in critical shipping lanes.
US Response to Iran
Speaking to a crowd in Milwaukee, Vance outlined the collapse of a brief understanding between the two nations aimed at securing safe passage for commercial vessels. The Vice President indicated that a temporary pause in the conflict had abruptly ended within the last day.
“The basic deal that we cut was, ‘We’ll lift our blockade if you stop shooting at ships. But if you shoot at ships, we’re going to punch back, and we’re going to punch back harder than ever before,’” Vance said. “That was the deal. They said they would stop shooting at ships, and what happened 24 hours ago? They start shooting at ships again.”
Impact on Domestic Economy
The conflict centers heavily on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world’s petroleum passes. Vance linked the administration’s aggressive posture in the region directly to domestic economic stability, noting that keeping the shipping lanes clear has already impacted fuel costs at home.
“The president maintains a lot of options,” Vance said regarding potential next steps. “I’m obviously not going to tell you exactly what’s going to happen tonight, but the president has said to them very simply: The Strait of Hormuz is going to be open. That means oil and gas is going to flow to the American people.”
