Voters in Key Battleground States Report Deep Political Divide on NBC Road Tour

In a six‑day reporting series titled “Drive to Decision Day,” NBC News senior national politics reporter Jon Allen traveled along an Interstate 80 corridor that stretched from Washington, D.C., through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa and ended in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. The series, aired on NBC’s Meet the Press NOW, sought to capture the mood of voters in eight competitive congressional districts as the 2026 midterm election approaches.

National and local perspectives heard

While the tour covered a broad swath of the country, the final stop in the Omaha area highlighted a pivotal House race. Democrat Denise Powell is challenging Republican Brinker Harding for the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Don Bacon, a contest both parties view as crucial for control of the House of Representatives.

Throughout the tour, Allen asked voters to deliver a direct message to the president in a recurring segment called “Dear Donald.” Responses ranged from vehement criticism to heartfelt support, underscoring the deep polarization that many Americans experience in their daily lives.

Criticism and calls for resignation

In New Jersey, voter Gloria Mendez expressed anger toward immigration enforcement, saying, “I would say f*ck ICE and get out of here and treat your people with respect because we’re all human beings like everybody, so you know, everybody should reserve dignity of our bright lives.” Another New Jersey resident simply added, “I love you brother,” indicating a more conciliatory tone.

In Ohio, Rich Sweebe called for the president’s resignation, stating, “Resign. You’re destroying the country.” An Iowa voter echoed that sentiment, describing the president as “completely unhinged and disqualified from serving as president” and urging him to step down.

Support and calls to press on

Not all comments were negative. Iowa voter David Quakenbush, a former Navy sailor, invoked a naval motto, telling Allen, “When I was in the Navy, we had a captain come on board, and he brought a phrase, or I guess you could say a motto, for our ship and it was press on regardless. And that’s what I would say to Mr. Trump. Press on regardless. I think he’s doing a great job.”

Allen also noted that several Republican voters he spoke with expressed disappointment over perceived broken promises, showing that frustration cuts across party lines.

Family and community strain

Beyond opinions about leadership, the tour revealed how political division is straining personal relationships. A Pennsylvania voter said, “I have a neighbor who I just love, but we can’t even broach the subject,” adding that finding a reasonable Republican to discuss the president with has been difficult.

In Ohio, Sweebe described conversations with friends and relatives as “too heated and too much emotion generated from both sides,” noting “irreconcilable differences” and “different realities.” In Iowa, Dorothy Quakenbush said, “We’ve lost friends over them. You know they’re Democrat all the way no matter what.”

Allen summed up the sentiment, telling anchor Kristen Welker, “People are angry at Washington. They’re angry at the establishment, but they’re also angry at each other. And I think a lot of them feel some sorrow over that.”

Implications for the upcoming election

The tour’s findings suggest that political polarization is not only a national headline but a lived reality for families and neighbors in swing districts. As candidates in these battleground states gear up for the 2026 midterms, the challenge of bridging these divides may become a decisive factor in voter turnout and election outcomes.
