Voter Apathy in Clark County

A recent letter to the editor in Clark County Today discussed the low voter turnout in the primary election, with approximately 223,000 eligible voters not participating. The author, Anthony P. Tesso, argued that the non-voters are not apathetic, but rather, they have made a conscious decision based on the candidates and issues presented.

Voter Disillusionment

Tesso cited a Knight Foundation survey of 12,000 people, which found that the top reason for non-voters is disliking the candidates. He also pointed out that working-class individuals, who are disproportionately affected by economic issues, feel that their concerns are not being addressed by the current political system.

The author criticized the idea that non-voters are simply refusing to participate, comparing it to a child refusing to eat vegetables. Instead, he suggested that non-voters are adults who have read the menu and are not satisfied with the options presented.

Washington State’s Regressive Tax Code

Tesso also discussed Washington state’s regressive tax code, which he argued has led to working-class individuals being squeezed by high taxes and living costs. He criticized the Democrats in Olympia for not doing enough to address these issues, particularly in terms of taxation and spending.

The author concluded that the low voter turnout is not a character flaw, but rather, a reflection of the current political system’s failure to address the concerns of working-class individuals. He argued that voters will turn out when they see candidates and issues that truly represent their interests.
