The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has no current plans to enforce Deltona’s new ordinance banning e-bikes, motorized scooters, and mopeds for anyone under 18. Sheriff Mike Chitwood questioned the enforceability of the ordinance, citing state law as the guiding principle for his deputies.
State Law Takes Precedence
Chitwood emphasized that his deputies will enforce Florida law, which subjects certain e-bikes to stricter requirements, including registration and a driver’s license. The sheriff’s focus is on education, working with Volusia County Schools to educate kids and inform parents about the risks associated with e-bikes.
Deltona Mayor Santiago Avila Jr. shared concerns about the ordinance, particularly the age restriction. The next Deltona City Commission meeting is set for Monday, where the ordinance may be discussed further.
