A Volusia County sheriff’s deputy and his K-9 partner were uninjured after the deputy crashed a patrol vehicle into a retention pond near the Interstate 95 and State Road 92 interchange, authorities said.
The crash happened where State Road 92 merges with I-95. According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was driving about 92 mph when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove straight into the pond, totaling the patrol vehicle.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood criticized the deputy’s driving, saying dash camera video showed the patrol vehicle speeding past traffic traveling at about the posted speed limit before plunging into the water.
No injuries were reported. The Sheriff’s Office said a traffic homicide investigation is underway, and an internal investigation will follow.
