Colorado Springs’ Vista Ridge football team is gearing up for the new season with high expectations and a strong work ethic. Despite a young roster, the team is confident in their ability to compete for a state championship.
Building Toughness
The team has been focusing on developing the toughness required to succeed at the varsity level. Coaches have emphasized physicality and teaching players how to channel aggression in productive ways.
Senior defensive lineman Zavion Frederick said, ‘I’ve been playing with a chip on my shoulder since I was in third grade.’ This edge is exactly what coaches are trying to cultivate as the season approaches.
Head coach Matt Wibbels believes that young athletes thrive when expectations are clear. ‘They want structure,’ he said. ‘It doesn’t seem like it all the time, but they want structure. It’s just got to provide the right kind of structure of accountability, character, and trust.’
Season Ahead
Vista Ridge takes on Mesa Ridge to open up their season in week zero when they host Mesa Ridge on Friday, August 21. The team is looking forward to a successful season and is embracing the challenge of proving themselves.
