Vice President JD Vance to campaign for Ohio GOP at Middletown steel plant

Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to return to Middletown, Ohio, on Friday for a campaign stop at the Cleveland‑Cliffs Middletown Works steel plant. The facility, known as Armco Steel when Vance’s grandfather, James Vance, spent nearly four decades there, provides a personal backdrop for the vice president’s appeal to local voters.

Family roots and economic message

In a radio interview on the “Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show,” Vance described the visit as “personally very meaningful” because of his family’s long‑standing connection to the plant. He credited the Trump administration’s economic policies for keeping plants like this open, saying they would not exist without those policies.

Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, portrays the steel mill as the economic engine that lifted his grandparents from Kentucky’s hills into the American middle class. He recalled how his grandfather, affectionately called “Papaw,” would proudly point to a Ford or Chevrolet and note that its steel came from the plant.

Campaign goals and Republican slate

The vice president will join U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright for the event and plans to visit several Cincinnati‑area chili restaurants afterward. The stop is part of a broader push to rally support for Republican candidates ahead of the November midterm elections, including Senate and gubernatorial races in Ohio.

In the 2024 presidential election, Trump and Vance carried Middletown’s precincts with roughly 62% of the vote. Vance’s mother, Beverly Aikins, and his sister continue to reside in the city, underscoring his personal ties to the community.

Statewide political landscape

Ohio has shifted solidly Republican during the Trump era, though Democrats see an opening to contest the governor’s office and a U.S. Senate seat. Republican Sen. Jon Husted, appointed to replace Vance in the Senate, faces a challenge from former Sen. Sherrod Brown, who lost his 2024 reelection bid to Republican Bernie Moreno.

Brown has highlighted opposition to data centers in Ohio, accusing Husted of being the “face of data centers” in the state. The National Republican Senatorial Committee warned that backlash could make Husted vulnerable.

Other races on the horizon

Vivek Ramaswamy, a Vance ally, is the Republican nominee for governor, running against Democrat Amy Acton. Democrats have not won the Ohio governor’s office in two decades.

Vance, who recently welcomed his fourth child, also announced a forthcoming trip to Brewer, Maine, where former Republican Gov. Paul LePage is contesting a House seat against Democrat Matt Dunlap.

Local impact

The Middletown steel plant remains a significant employer in the region, symbolizing the manufacturing base that many Ohio families depend on. Vance’s appearance is expected to energize local GOP volunteers and underscore the administration’s focus on reviving U.S. manufacturing.

As the campaign season intensifies, Vance’s hometown stop illustrates how personal history and national policy intersect in Ohio’s mid‑term political battles.
