Rapid City, SD – On Sunday, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1273 opened its doors for a heartfelt community effort called “Boots on the Ground.” From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event was reserved exclusively for veterans, giving them first pick of tables stocked with winter coats, hats, gloves, T‑shirts and sturdy boots – all provided free of charge. After 2 p.m., the doors opened to the public, allowing families of service members to benefit as well.
Meeting a Seasonal Need
Organizers explained that the primary goal was to address a pressing need: ensuring that veterans have adequate warm clothing as winter temperatures drop across the Black Hills. “We wanted to make sure no veteran has to face the cold without proper gear,” said a VFW spokesperson.
Veterans Share Their Gratitude
Retired Air Force member Joe Kern, a longtime volunteer, described the event as deeply rewarding. “About eight years ago a man came in crying because he finally got a brand‑new pair of boots. He had duct‑tape wrapped around his old ones. Moments like that give me goosebumps – it’s why we give back,” Kern said.
Kern also highlighted the lasting bond formed among service members. “We have all branches represented – it’s a brotherhood. In the military you build that camaraderie; after you leave, you can lose it. This organization helps keep that connection alive.”
Volunteers Keep the Day Running
VFW members and community volunteers spent the afternoon assisting attendees in finding the right sizes, answering questions about additional resources, and sharing a cup of coffee while they chatted. Their presence ensured a smooth flow of the event and allowed veterans to receive personalized help.
Looking Ahead
Post 1273’s leadership hopes the turnout will inspire continued community support for future initiatives. “When the community sees how many veterans benefit, we expect even more generosity for upcoming events,” the post said. The organization plans to host similar drives throughout the colder months, aiming to reach every veteran in need across the region.
How to Get Involved
Residents who wish to volunteer or donate winter apparel are encouraged to contact VFW Post 1273 directly. Contributions of new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, and boots are always welcome, and volunteers are needed to staff future distribution events.
By rallying local businesses, churches, and families, the “Boots on the Ground” event exemplifies the power of community‑first action, reinforcing the values of service, family, and faith that define Rapid City’s spirit.
