Veteran NHL Forward Kevin Hayes Announces Retirement After 12 Seasons

Massachusetts‑born forward Kevin Hayes has officially ended his professional hockey career. The 34‑year‑old announced his retirement on Monday, after a 12‑year tenure in the National Hockey League that spanned five clubs.

Career Overview

Hayes entered the league as a first‑round draft pick, selected 24th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Though he never suited up for Chicago, he built a solid career with the New York Rangers (2014‑2019), Winnipeg Jets (2019), Philadelphia Flyers (2019‑2023), St. Louis Blues (2023‑2024) and most recently the Pittsburgh Penguins (2024‑2026).

Across 805 regular‑season games, Hayes tallied 185 goals and 261 assists for a total of 446 points. He also contributed 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists) in 56 playoff contests, showcasing his ability to perform when the stakes were highest.

Final Season and KHL Stint

In the 2025‑26 season, Hayes appeared in 28 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, recording four goals and four assists. Following the NHL season, he signed a short‑term contract with Ak Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) on August 25, appearing in five games before deciding to retire.

“I have decided to end my hockey career,” Hayes said in his retirement statement. “I can no longer play at the level I am capable of because my body does not allow me to perform at my best. And I cannot accept not being in top form.”

Legacy and Recognition

Nicknamed “Hollywood” for his flair on the ice, Hayes earned an All‑Star selection while with the Flyers in the 2022‑23 season. His consistent two‑way play, strong work ethic, and leadership earned respect from teammates and coaches across the league.

Beyond the numbers, Hayes’ impact extended to the locker room, where he was known for mentoring younger players and exemplifying the values of dedication and perseverance—principles that resonate with families and faith‑based communities alike.

What’s Next?

While Hayes has not disclosed specific post‑retirement plans, many former players transition into coaching, broadcasting, or community outreach. Given his reputation and ties to his home state, it would not be surprising to see him involved in youth hockey programs or charitable initiatives that promote the sport among the next generation.

Fans and former teammates have already begun to share tributes on social media, highlighting Hayes’ contributions on and off the ice. As the hockey world bids farewell to a reliable veteran, his legacy will endure through the countless games he helped win and the young athletes he inspired.
