Veteran Jockey Perry Wayne Ouzts Continues Racing at 71

In the world of horse racing, Perry Wayne Ouzts stands out not for his fame or fortune, but for his enduring passion and dedication. At 71, Ouzts has saddled up for more than 53,000 races, a record among North American jockeys. Raised in Riverdale, Arkansas, Ouzts knew from a young age that he wanted to be a jockey, a dream he realized at 18.

A Lifetime of Racing

Ouzts’ career spans over five decades, a remarkable feat in a profession known for its physical demands and risks. Despite numerous injuries, including a severe accident in 2006 that left him with multiple fractures, Ouzts has never considered retiring. His commitment to the sport is evident in his disciplined lifestyle, which includes a strict diet and regular exercise.

Ouzts’ love for horses was nurtured by his cousins, who were involved in horse training and racing. This familial influence led him to Chicago, where he learned the trade and won his first race in 1973. Since then, he has amassed 7,534 wins, ranking fifth among U.S. jockeys.

Family and Faith

Despite his achievements, Ouzts remains grounded. He and his wife, Toni, have been married for 42 years and have two sons. The couple resides in Hebron, Kentucky, where they have built a life centered around family and faith. Ouzts’ wife is involved in horse training, and many of his rides now come through her connections.

Ouzts’ story is not just about racing; it’s about a man who found contentment in pursuing his passion. As he continues to ride, he reflects on his life with gratitude, feeling blessed for the career he has had. For Ouzts, the thrill of riding is as strong today as it was when he first started.
