Vero Beach, Fla. – Vero Beach High School quarterback Champ Monds announced on Saturday via his Instagram account that a minor medical procedure has forced him to sit out the remainder of the 2026 high‑school football season. In his post, Monds wrote, “my 2026 season has been cut short due to an unexpected minor procedure that needs to be addressed.”
The 16‑year‑old, a four‑star recruit who re‑classified to the class of 2027, was rated as the nation’s top quarterback prospect for the 2028 class. Monds helped lead the Fighting Indians to an undefeated regular season last year, though the team fell short in the 7A state championship game, losing in the final seconds.
College commitment remains firm
Despite the setback, Monds confirmed his commitment to the University of Notre Dame, where he will join the Fighting Irish next season. He praised head coach Marcus Freeman and the Notre Dame staff, saying they made him feel “right at home” during his spring visit. Monds chose Notre Dame over offers from Ohio State and Florida State, citing the respect and hospitality he received from the coaching staff and players.
“Notre Dame when I went up there it was a special place. I went up there in the spring for spring practice and the coaching staff and the players, they all treated me with the utmost respect. It was kind of an easy decision,” Monds said.
Family athletic pedigree
Monds comes from a notable athletic lineage; his father played professional baseball and his grandfather was an NFL player. Standing 6‑foot‑3 and weighing 230 pounds, the young quarterback possesses the size and skill that have made him a top national recruit.
He announced his college decision on the Pat McAfee Show on ESPN, describing the moment as “surreal” and a “blessing.” “It still feels unreal. It’s a blessing to be in the position I was in and I can’t do anything but thank God for that,” he added.
While Monds will miss the remainder of the high‑school season, his future at Notre Dame remains bright, and Vero Beach fans look forward to cheering him on when he takes the field at the collegiate level.
