Vernon Memorial Day Parade Honors Fallen Heroes Despite Rain

In Vernon, Connecticut, the spirit of remembrance triumphed over inclement weather as the community gathered for its annual Memorial Day parade. While other towns canceled their events due to rain, Vernon residents and participants remained steadfast in their commitment to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

State Representative Tim Ackert, an Air Force veteran, has been a dedicated participant in the parade for over a decade. He emphasized the importance of remembering the true purpose of Memorial Day. “Think about somebody that gets into a helicopter or sits in a tank or is on the battlegrounds,” Ackert remarked, highlighting the hardships faced by service members. “That’s why you come out in a little bit of rain and really do this job.”

The parade, which coincides with America’s 250th anniversary year celebration, saw dozens of participants, including a Betsy Ross reenactor and displays themed around the Revolutionary War. The event began at a local church and proceeded to Mount Hope Cemetery, where participants paid tribute to fallen heroes by reading the Gettysburg Address and playing traditional drums and fifes.

Honoring Veterans and Service Members

Organizer Linda Welles expressed the event’s deep-rooted purpose of honoring veterans and service members. “I honor the veterans and everything that they have done for us and continue to do for us, all our service people,” she stated, underscoring the community’s gratitude for their sacrifices.

Mayor Dan Champagne, who also has a military background, reflected on the significance of Memorial Day as a time to remember those who never returned home. “I served, Tim served,” Champagne said. “Just realizing that some did not come home. They gave what we’re in for right now. Thinking about those that are coming home from that and the families left here, that’s why we come.”

The Vernon Memorial Day parade serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by service members and the importance of community gatherings that honor their legacy, regardless of the weather.
