Venezuela has been “fully compliant” with requests from the United States to advance the humanitarian response to twin earthquakes, according to US chargé d’affaires in Caracas John Barrett. The earthquakes have led to widespread criticism of the official response, with many civilians leading rescue and recovery operations on the ground.
Criticism of Official Response
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has defended the government’s handling of the quakes, saying there is a media conspiracy to discredit the official response. However, global humanitarian organizations, including the International Rescue Committee, have criticized the government’s response.
Barrett stated that the US will continue to lead initiatives to mobilize international response teams to reach those communities in need. The US has provided over $310 million in aid to Venezuela following the earthquakes.
