Venezuela has been hit by two powerful earthquakes, resulting in a significant loss of life and widespread destruction. The death toll has climbed to at least 920, with 3,360 injured, according to authorities.
Earthquakes Strike Venezuela
The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes struck 39 seconds apart along the San Sebastian fault on Venezuela’s northern coast. The first earthquake, a 7.2-magnitude foreshock, hit west of Morón on the Caribbean coast, about 170 kilometers west of Caracas.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has launched an Emergency Appeal for $61 million to assist its operations in Venezuela. The United States is sending $150 million in aid, and the European Union is sending 520 responders to support Venezuela.
Many countries, including Brazil, China, and the United States, are providing humanitarian aid to Venezuela. Venezuelans in the U.S. are also organizing donation drives to help those affected by the earthquakes.
The earthquakes have caused significant damage in Caracas and other areas, with many buildings destroyed and thousands of people left homeless. The Venezuelan government has deployed rescue teams to affected areas and is working to provide aid to those in need.
