In an effort to combat opioid overdoses, New York City has installed vending machines that provide free public health supplies, including naloxone kits. The machines, which are located in Staten Island’s North Shore neighborhoods, offer a range of supplies, including emergency contraception pills, condoms, and socks.
Addressing the Opioid Crisis
The installation of the vending machines is part of a larger effort to address the opioid crisis in New York City. According to the city’s Health Department, there were 3,070 fatal drug overdoses in 2022, a number that has since dropped significantly. However, the highest rates of fatal overdoses persist in parts of the Bronx, Upper Manhattan, and Central Brooklyn.
The vending machines are stocked with supplies based on research that included conversations with people in recovery and others still using drugs. Users of the machines are asked to enter a ZIP code, which is logged. The machines are available 24/7, and users do not need insurance or an appointment to access the supplies.
The initiative is funded by the city’s opioid settlement fund, which is providing $12 million to expand drug prevention, treatment, and recovery services, as well as harm reduction services, in Staten Island. The machines have been installed in areas with high rates of fatal overdoses, and community leaders hope that they will help to reduce the number of overdose deaths in the city.
