A mysterious message has appeared on the National Mall, sparking an investigation. The numbers ‘8647’ were found etched into the grass, east of the World War II Memorial. It’s unclear when the markings first appeared, but they were not visible in photos from June 5.

Investigation Underway

The Secret Service has deferred comment to the US Park Police, who are handling the investigation. A spokesperson for the Park Police said the cause of the discoloration of the grass has not been determined. Samples were collected for testing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Interior described the markings as ‘deranged vandalism’ which ‘will not be tolerated.’ The Department takes any threat against the President very seriously and will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.

The numbers ‘8647’ have been used to signal opposition to President Donald Trump, with ’86’ often used as a code in the restaurant industry meaning to get rid of or remove an order or patron, and Trump being the 47th President.
