Vancouver firefighters contain two‑alarm warehouse blaze in 40 minutes

Just after 6 p.m. on Friday, August 28, firefighters from the Vancouver Fire Department and Clark County Fire District responded to a large fire at 7017 Northeast St. Johns Road. The initial call described a box or dumpster fire, but crews quickly discovered that flames were engulfing a dumpster, a grass area south of the building, and a nearby railroad car.

Because the fire was spreading across multiple zones, the incident commander called for a second alarm, bringing additional crews and equipment to the scene. Firefighters established several fire divisions to coordinate suppression efforts, protect the surrounding area, and maintain accountability for all personnel on the incident.

The blaze had entered the Furniture World SW warehouse, igniting stored furniture inventory. Despite the rapid development, the combined effort of 56 firefighters brought the fire under control in roughly 40 minutes. No injuries were reported among the firefighters or the public.

Furniture World employees were alerted by the building’s fire alarm and evacuated safely. The railroad car involved in the fire belongs to the Chilachi Prairie Railroad, a nonprofit organization based in Yakult, Washington, which was storing a passenger car and a wrecking crane on the property for future restoration projects.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office. Officials praised the swift, coordinated response, noting that the rapid containment prevented further damage to nearby homes and businesses and underscored the importance of well‑trained local fire services.

Community impact and next steps

Residents in the surrounding neighborhood expressed relief that the fire was controlled quickly and without injury. Local officials reminded citizens of the importance of maintaining clear access routes for emergency vehicles and keeping combustible materials away from structures.

The Vancouver City Council is expected to review fire safety protocols for commercial properties during its upcoming public‑safety committee meeting. In the meantime, Furniture World SW plans to assess damage to its inventory and resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so.
