An attempted escape at the Vance County Jail on Monday resulted in an inmate being seriously injured, according to multiple sources. The incident is the latest in a series of problems at the facility, which has faced issues with security, cleanliness, and overcrowding.
Concerns Over Jail Conditions
Activists and former inmates have raised concerns about the conditions at the jail, including the presence of bed bugs, roaches, and mold. Two former inmates spoke to WRAL about their experiences, describing issues with cleanliness and a lack of supplies.
Domestic Violence Awareness activist Corliss Williams described the conditions as ‘uninhabitable,’ citing conversations with inmates who reported holes in the walls, feces on the floor, and inadequate medical attention.
Protest and Calls for Change
Tuesday morning, activists and people who have spent time in the jail gathered to protest. Pastor Donna Hargrove is concerned about the jail’s proximity to a church and the impact of recent security issues on the community. ‘We’re demanding a change. It’s just not a safe facility for anything at this point,’ Hargrove said.
Activist Karen Perry is calling for more humane treatment of inmates. ‘I don’t take away from whatever has happened and brought them to this point, but I do take away the fact that they should be treated like they are human,’ Perry said.
Vance County is building a new jail, but activists say it’s not happening fast enough. ‘I would like to see immediate action,’ Williams said. ‘Building a new facility to house future inmates and everything is great. But we need some resolve right now.’
