Valkyries hold off Wings 91-80 behind Williams’ 25-point performance

The Golden State Valkyries defeated the Dallas Wings 91-80 on Wednesday at Chase Center in San Francisco, picking up the home victory behind a dominant individual effort and solid team execution.

Gabby Williams led all scorers with 25 points for Golden State, providing the offensive engine the Valkyries needed to keep Dallas at bay throughout the contest. Kayla Thornton was a force on the glass, hauling in 11 rebounds to anchor the interior, while Veronica Burton directed the offense with 5 assists.

Dallas got a strong showing from its own stars but couldn’t close the gap. Arike Ogunbowale paced the Wings with 21 points, and Paige Bueckers was the catalyst in the backcourt, dishing out a game-high 8 assists. Jessica Shepard contributed 10 rebounds to keep Dallas competitive on the boards.

Despite those individual efforts, the Wings were ultimately undone by their struggles at the free-throw line. Dallas converted just 11 of 16 attempts from the stripe, a 69 percent clip that left points on the board in a game decided by 11. The Wings shot 47 percent from the field overall, going 30-for-64, and connected on 9 of 22 three-point attempts for a 41 percent mark — respectable numbers that nonetheless weren’t enough to overcome Golden State’s advantage.

Dallas also committed 8 turnovers on the night, a factor that helped Golden State maintain control in the second half. The Wings managed 19 assists as a team and recorded 10 steals, showing they were active defensively, but the Valkyries proved too much to handle at home, pulling away for the 11-point final margin.

Golden State’s ability to generate consistent offense while limiting Dallas’s second-chance opportunities — the Wings grabbed just 2 offensive rebounds — proved to be the decisive edge in a competitive but ultimately one-sided finish at Chase Center.
