Valencia County Family Day Raises Funds for New Mexico Special Olympics

On Saturday, Calvary Chapel in Belen hosted the fifth annual Valencia County Family Day, a community‑focused fundraiser that benefitted the New Mexico Special Olympics. The event drew fire units from across the state, a bustling car and bike show, a cornhole tournament and the ever‑popular fire‑truck pull.

Community participation fuels the day

“It gets our athletes involved, as well as involved in the community,” said Tina Archibeque, whose son competes as a Special Olympian. “We’re grateful for that because that gets our kids motivated.” Archibeque’s remarks captured the spirit of the day: families, volunteers and local businesses came together to celebrate and support athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Valencia County Fire Chief Matt Propp echoed that sentiment, noting the broad reach of the event. “This is always a great event. We get participation from teams all across the state,” he said. “And at the end of the day, it’s to support the athletes, the Special Olympics.” The fire‑truck pull featured fire engines from multiple New Mexico departments, highlighting the public‑safety community’s commitment to the cause.

Fun activities and fierce competition

Beyond the fire‑truck pull, attendees enjoyed a lively car and bike showcase, where classic and custom vehicles drew crowds of enthusiasts. The cornhole tournament added a friendly competitive edge, and several Special Olympians joined the games, demonstrating both skill and sportsmanship.

Smiles were everywhere as participants of all ages cheered one another on. The event’s festive atmosphere underscored the importance of community involvement in nurturing confidence and camaraderie among the athletes.

Proceeds support statewide programming

All proceeds from the day’s activities will be directed to the New Mexico Special Olympics, helping fund training, competition travel and inclusive programming for athletes throughout the state. By channeling local generosity into a statewide effort, Valencia County families are reinforcing the values of service, family unity and faith‑based stewardship.

Organizers hope the event’s success will inspire future gatherings and expand support for Special Olympics athletes. “When our community comes together, we lift up every child,” Archibeque added, emphasizing the lasting impact of collective effort.

Valencia County Family Day stands as a testament to the power of local volunteers, public‑service agencies and families working side by side to champion inclusive athletics and strengthen the bonds that hold neighborhoods together.
