The University of Wisconsin system announced its fall 2026 enrollment figures on Monday, showing a total of 164,579 students based on 10th‑day counts. This represents a slight decline of 1,233 students compared with the fall 2025 semester.
International enrollment drives the dip
University officials said the primary cause of the overall decrease was a drop in international enrollment, which fell by 1,134 students to a total of 8,889. Despite that decline, Interim President Renée Wachter emphasized that “enrollment remains strong across the Universities of Wisconsin, even as international enrollment declined significantly.”
First‑year and Direct Admit growth
First‑year enrollment was virtually unchanged, slipping by only 38 students to 28,442. More encouraging was the growth in the Direct Admit Wisconsin program, which now serves roughly 7,200 first‑year students—up from 5,200 the previous fall. Direct Admit participants account for 46 % of first‑year enrollment at participating UW campuses.
High‑school special enrollment hits record
High‑school special enrollment, a pathway that allows high‑school seniors to take college courses, reached a record high of 14,579 students, an increase of 857 from the prior year.
Expanding flexible options for working adults
Wachter highlighted new initiatives such as UW Flexible Option, which provides online and hybrid courses designed for working adults. “Creating more pathways to a UW education is good for students and good for Wisconsin,” she said.
The system expects final enrollment revisions to be made at the end of the semester, but the current numbers suggest a stable overall picture despite the international dip.
