PHOENIX — As anticipation builds for the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto 6, scammers are exploiting the hype with bogus websites that promise early downloads, exclusive content or demo access for a fee. Chris Mawson, founder of the local gaming hub Power Up Gaming, said the surge in fake offers is a direct result of the game’s massive popularity.
Scam tactics targeting gamers
According to Mawson, the fraudulent schemes typically appear in two forms. The first involves a website that looks professional and claims to provide a pre‑release version of the game. Visitors are asked to download a file or install a program that, once run, can install malware on the computer. “If we download that file and launch it, we might be unleashing malware on our computer, giving scammers access to everything from our banking information through to our gaming accounts, passwords,” Mawson explained.
The second tactic uses social‑media posts or direct messages that advertise a limited‑time demo in exchange for cryptocurrency payment. After the victim sends the crypto to the scammers’ wallet, the promised demo never arrives and the scammers disappear.
Real‑world losses and how to protect yourself
“We spoke to a user last week who actually spent a thousand dollars believing they were getting access to download the game early,” Mawson said. “The offer was a scam.” He noted that while the exact amount of money lost to these scams is unknown, the pattern mirrors past frauds surrounding major game releases.
Mawson advises gamers to follow three simple steps:
- Only purchase or pre‑order the game through official channels such as the Rockstar Games website, major retailers or authorized digital platforms.
- Never download files or run installers from unverified sites, especially those that claim to provide early access.
- If you suspect you have already clicked a malicious link, disconnect the device from the internet immediately and run a reputable anti‑malware scan before reconnecting.
Why the scams are becoming more convincing
The expert observed that fake sites now appear “far more legitimate on the surface compared to a few years ago.” He attributes this to the shift away from physical media toward digital distribution, which can blur the line between legitimate download sources and fraudulent ones.
“I think as we move away from physical media for the biggest and best gaming releases, the lines potentially are going to get blurred between what’s a legitimate download source and what’s not,” Mawson said.
Official release timeline
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be available for pre‑order now, but there is no way to play the game before the official launch date of November 19. Mawson emphasized that any claim to the contrary is false.
For Arizona residents who think they may have fallen victim to a scam, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office recommends reporting the incident through its online fraud portal and monitoring bank and credit‑card statements for unauthorized activity.
Stay vigilant, verify sources, and enjoy the game responsibly when it arrives.
