Uvalde residents are dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding that hit their city. The flooding, which was caused by heavy rain, damaged homes and businesses, leaving many without access to basic necessities.
Flood Damage
The creek behind Aracely Balderas’ home was almost always empty, but on Thursday morning, it was overflowing, causing 2 feet of water to flood her house. Balderas’ home was not the only one affected, as many other homes in the area were also damaged by the floodwaters.
Uvalde received heavy rain for three days, totaling more than 2 feet in certain locations, according to the National Weather Service. The river gauge for the nearby Nueces River rose above major flood stage, causing widespread damage and displacement.
Community Response
Despite the devastating damage, the community is coming together to support those affected. Families, neighbors, and community members are helping with cleanup efforts, bringing food, and providing emotional support to those in need.
Julio Valdez, a local restaurant owner, brought dozens of enchilada plates to the affected area to feed those who were displaced. Delia Matas, a resident, was grateful for the help she received from her community, saying, ‘It’s so hard without help. These people who just came to help out, and they showed up.’
The city was prepared for the flood, and many residents were evacuated before the waters rose. However, some residents, like Kimberly Rubio, were not prepared and had to grab a few essentials and leave their homes quickly.
