Utility Regulators Meet with Industry Execs

Utility regulators from around the country met with industry executives at a private retreat in West Palm Beach, Florida, raising questions about the influence of big donors on public policy. The Regulators Roundtable, a conservative group, organized the event, which was attended by commissioners who regulate the utility industry.

Industry Funding and Access

The Regulators Roundtable is funded by major utility and tech companies, including Google, NRG Energy, and the American Gas Association. The group promises its sponsors access to key decision-makers and the opportunity to provide insights and expertise that can help shape policy.

Critics argue that the close relationship between regulators and industry executives creates a conflict of interest and undermines the public’s trust in the regulatory process. "These are companies whose profits are directly affected by decisions made by a remarkably small group of regulators," said Gabriel Straus, a research fellow at the Energy and Policy Institute.

Regulatory Decisions and Public Interest

The regulators who attended the retreat have significant influence over the utility industry, with the power to approve or reject projects and set rates for consumers. The Regulators Roundtable has also been involved in campaigns to elect conservative commissioners, who tend to support the interests of the utility industry.

While the group’s president, Elizabeth Gianini, denied any conflicts of interest, watchdog groups argue that the industry-funded intermingling of regulators and executives is a brazen conflict that prioritizes corporate interests over the public good.
