UT Arlington Studies Air Quality During FIFA World Cup

As the FIFA World Cup brings upwards of 3.8 million people to North Texas, researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington are using this opportunity to study air quality in the region. Dr. Yunyao Li, an assistant professor in UT Arlington’s department of earth and environmental sciences, is leading the effort to track pollutants tied to health concerns.

Air Quality Monitoring

Li has set up several air quality monitors across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including one at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, another at AT&T Stadium, and one at the University of Texas at Arlington. These monitors are tracking pollutants that can lead to lung issues and heart problems.

According to Li, the data collected during the World Cup will help prepare for the region’s growing population. The North Central Texas Council of Governments expects the region to pass 9 million people next year, and Li’s goal is to help local agencies and governments identify the major sources of pollution and find solutions to reduce air pollution.

UT Arlington is looking for volunteers to participate in the study by placing smaller pollution sensors on their property. Those interested can email Dr. Li at [email protected].
