USMNT Star Builds Mini-Pitches

Tyler Adams, a midfielder for the US Men’s National Team (USMNT), is working to expand access to soccer by building mini-pitches across the country. These pitches, about the size of a basketball court, feature permanent metal goals and require minimal upkeep.

Aiming for Diversity and Accessibility

Adams’ effort is part of a broader initiative to increase diversity in the sport and provide more opportunities for young players, particularly in underserved areas. The US Soccer Foundation has set a goal to install 1,000 mini-pitches in such areas by the end of 2026.

According to Adams, the idea behind the mini-pitches is to give kids, especially in inner cities, access to soccer fields and the opportunity to play the game. He believes that this can have a positive impact on their lives and provide an alternative to less desirable activities.

Personal Experience and Inspiration

Adams, who became the first Black player to captain the USMNT at a FIFA World Cup in 2022, drew inspiration from his own experiences growing up in Hudson Valley, New York. He recalls running to parks to play soccer and notes that pitches are more readily available in Europe, where he currently plays for AFC Bournemouth.

A study by the US Soccer Federation found that 99% of respondents said their communities were more active after the installation of a mini-pitch, and 98% said their community felt safer. Adams hopes that the addition of mini-pitches will help improve diversity in the sport and reflect the diversity of the USMNT.
