The New World Screwworm (NWS), a flesh-eating parasite, has been discovered in American cattle, posing a significant threat to U.S. livestock producers. The most effective tool against NWS is releasing sterile flies that mate with wild screwworms, collapsing the population over time.
USDA Response
The USDA, under the leadership of Secretary Brooke Rollins, has taken decisive action to combat the NWS. In April 2025, Secretary Rollins worked with Mexican officials to open operational airspace in Mexico for the release of sterile flies, reduced import duties on necessary equipment, and established clear international and domestic communication on the threat.
The USDA has also invested in infrastructure in the U.S. and Mexico to increase sterile fly production. A new $8.5 million sterile fly dispersal facility has been opened in South Texas, which will release up to 300 million sterile flies per week. Additionally, the USDA has invested $21 million to improve a sterile fly production site in southern Mexico.
The administration has ensured that the fight against NWS is fully coordinated between all levels of government. A simulation was held in January 2026, attended by over 250 representatives from federal, state, local, and tribal authorities, to address modes of spread and response efforts.
