Usain Bolt laughs off robot 100m record, watches Manchester United derby

World‑famous sprinter Usain Bolt turned heads in Budapest on Sept. 13, not because of a new personal record but because a Chinese humanoid robot, Tiangong Ultra, clocked 8.64 seconds in the 100‑metre dash at the second World Humanoid Robot Games – nearly a full second faster than Bolt’s 9.58‑second world record set in 2009.

Bolt’s reaction

When asked about the robot’s performance, the 40‑year‑old Jamaican laughed, “It’s just one of those things. I guess that’s where the world is going right now,” adding that the news “made me smile.” He emphasized that the achievement is a sign of technological progress, not a threat to human athletes.

Focus on football

Despite the headline‑grabbing robot run, Bolt’s attention quickly shifted to football. A lifelong Manchester United supporter, he noted, “United is playing right now versus City in the Manchester derby – very important time.” The sprinter’s comment underscored his continued passion for the sport and his connection to the Manchester community.

Legacy and fitness

Bolt used the occasion to reflect on his place in sporting history. He said his goal has always been to be mentioned alongside legends like Muhammad Ali, and he is pleased to hear his name in that conversation. When reporters recalled criticism from last year’s Tokyo World Championships that suggested he was out of shape, Bolt dismissed it, insisting he is “in the best shape of my life” and works out daily.

Football flirtations

Bolt’s brief flirtation with a football career ended in 2018 after a two‑month trial with Australia’s Central Coast Mariners, where he scored twice in a friendly. More recently, rumors linked him to Wythenshawe Vets FC, a Sunday‑league side in south Manchester known for recruiting former Premier League players. Bolt said he first heard of the speculation when his longtime agent Ricky Simms texted, “Are you playing football now?” He added that any potential signing would be a “option” if he ever finds himself in Manchester.

Looking ahead

While the robot’s record run sparked global headlines, Bolt remains focused on enjoying retirement, supporting Manchester United, and staying fit. He showed no intention of dusting off his football boots, preferring to watch the derby and continue his daily training routine.
