USAF Report Highlights China’s Expanding Military Capabilities

China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has significantly enhanced its military capabilities across multiple domains, according to a recent report by the China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI), an Air Force think tank. The report highlights the PLA’s expansion in army, navy, air force, and rocket force structures, alongside advancements in space conflict, information warfare, and cyberwarfare.

Strategic Military Reforms

The report underscores the PLA’s restructuring efforts aimed at improving joint, all-domain operations and ‘informationized warfare’ in scenarios ranging from Taiwan to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans. This includes refining command structures within the five theater commands and bolstering space warfare capabilities following the creation of a new aerospace force in 2024.

CASI Director Brendan S. Mulvaney emphasized the rapid modernization of China’s aerospace forces, noting advancements in hypersonic weapons that rival, and in some cases surpass, those of the United States. The report also highlights the PLA’s strategic signaling through long-range nuclear deterrence, including joint bomber patrols with Russia near Japan and South Korea, and routine operations near Taiwan as a warning against ‘Taiwan independence.’

Naval and Missile Advancements

China’s development of aircraft carrier power projection is extending its naval aviation reach beyond the first island chain, narrowing gaps with U.S. carrier strike groups. The report indicates that China is nearing the capability to support sustained blue-water operations in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Additionally, the PLA’s missile power has advanced significantly, with a diverse array of missiles posing threats to U.S. and allied bases in the region. These developments complicate U.S. and partner operational planning by providing rapid, long-range precision strike options.

International Military Collaborations

The report also notes increased foreign joint exercises and military sales, strengthening defense ties with countries such as Russia, Iran, and Pakistan. Despite challenges such as anti-corruption campaigns and technical complexities, China’s rise as a military power continues, though not without risks of miscalculation during joint drills and close encounters.
