TerraPower and South Korea’s SK Innovation have signed a preliminary global agreement on small modular reactors (SMRs), Seoul’s Industry Ministry announced. The deal gives SK Innovation an opportunity to participate in TerraPower’s SMR projects in the United States and overseas.
Partnership Details
The agreement was signed in Seoul between TerraPower co-founder Bill Gates, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, and Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan. TerraPower, backed by Gates, is developing its sodium-cooled Natrium reactor project in Kemmerer, Wyoming, with a target commercial operation date of 2031.
South Korean companies, including SK and HD Hyundai, have made financial investments in TerraPower and are seeking roles in equipment supply, operations, and construction for its US and overseas projects. The growing demand for electricity from AI infrastructure and data centers is increasing global interest in SMRs, creating opportunities for Korean suppliers to enter emerging overseas supply chains.
