Moonshot AI was founded three years ago by Yang Zhilin, a promising software engineer. The company quickly reached national fame after releasing its first Kimi model in 2023. The international attention that Kimi K3 has garnered echoes the rise of DeepSeek in early 2025, when its R1 reasoning model sent shock waves through the global AI community.
Analysts say Moonshot’s achievement should be viewed through a different lens. While DeepSeek challenged the conventional wisdom that developing an advanced AI model requires massive financial investment and vast computing power, Kimi K3’s discount to frontier models is much smaller than R1’s was at launch.
