The threat to the US power grid is not just theoretical. In recent years, there have been multiple cases of cyber-attacks and physical sabotage of America’s domestic electricity, including the cyber-attack on the Colonial Pipeline and sniper attacks on high-voltage power transformers in California, Utah, and Oregon.

The US is also vulnerable to electromagnetic pulses (EMPs), which can cause widespread damage to electronic equipment. China, Russia, and North Korea all have EMP capability, and Iran was reportedly close to achieving it prior to the American-Israeli offensive in June 2025.
