The US opened the score early in the first half with a goal from Auston Trusty. However, Turkey scored its first goal of the tournament just seven minutes later, courtesy of Arda Guler.
The US struggled to create consistent pressure against Turkey, but eventually got on the board again with a goal from Sebastian Berhalter in the 49th minute. Despite some close efforts from Christian Pulisic, who came off the bench in the 58th minute, the US was unable to hold on for the win.
Turkey’s victory was a stunning upset, as the US was seeking to go 3-0-0 in the group stage for the first time ever. The US will now move on to the Round of 32, where it will face Bosnia and Herzegovina next Wednesday.
