US Launches Airstrikes Against Iran

The United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against Iran on Wednesday, responding to Iranian attacks on neighboring nations and dealing a heavy blow to a fragile two-month ceasefire. President Donald Trump warned that Iran will pay the price for stalled peace talks.

Escalating Conflict

His comments came just hours after Iranian forces fired on Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan. All three of those countries currently host US troops. This marks the second time this week that sudden attacks have threatened the ceasefire, following an exchange of fire between Iran and Israel on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump made his intentions clear. We’re going to hit them again hard today, he said. The warning came shortly after US Central Command confirmed it had already hit Iranian military sites.

The conflict is also escalating at sea. Just after the president spoke, the US military announced it had fired on an oil tanker trying to bypass an American blockade on Iranian ports. According to a social media post from US Central Command on Wednesday, this is the eighth merchant ship disabled in the waters off Iran’s coast.

International Implications

When asked if he plans to follow through on previous threats to destroy Iranian bridges and utility plants, Trump declined to say. Instead, he urged Iranian leaders to sign an agreement with the US. We were really close to a deal but they keep tapping us along, Trump said.

Despite facing weeks of heavy bombing, Iran continues to hold its ground. The country is using its ability to shut down the Strait of Hormuz—a massive passageway for global oil and natural gas—as a powerful bargaining chip.

While both the US and Iran appear to be looking for a resolution they can sell as a victory to their citizens, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pursuing much larger goals. Netanyahu is pushing for the total collapse of Iran’s theocratic government, the end of its nuclear program, and the destruction of the Iranian-allied Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.
