A US investor, Balaji Srinivasan, has criticized Malaysia’s immigration probe into a digital nomad community, saying it could harm the country’s tech ambitions. Srinivasan, the founder of Network School, made the comments after authorities inspected the community following anonymous social media claims of law violations.
Immigration Probe
The Immigration Department found that all members of the community had valid travel documents, but Srinivasan said the process was still a punishment. He has put his further planned investments in the country on hold until he receives assurances that the episode will not be repeated.
Muslim-majority Malaysia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and has laws that restrict the entry of Israelis. However, there are no specific laws barring Israelis from traveling on second-country passports.
Srinivasan’s comments come as Malaysia is trying to become a global tech startup hub, with attractive visa programs for foreign talent and investors. The country has also seen a data center investment boom in the state of Johor, where the Network School is based.
