US Interest in World Cup Lags

A recent Emerson College poll found that only 22% of overall respondents said they’re very interested in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with another one-third of respondents being somewhat interested, and 45% saying they were not interested at all.

Demographic Breakdown

Interest in the World Cup is significantly higher among younger voters than older, with 38% of voters under 40 being very interested in the World Cup compared to 10% of those 70 and over. Additionally, 42% of respondents plan to follow the games closely, while 58% said they won’t follow them much or at all.

The tournament, being held in 16 stadiums across the US, Canada, and Mexico, is the first since FIFA expanded the field from 32 teams to 48, adding four more groups in the initial stage and a new round of 32 in the knockout portion. This will be the second time that the US has hosted the World Cup.

Results also show that race has a relationship with interest in the tournament, with 60% of Hispanic voters and 63% of Black voters planning to follow the World Cup somewhat or very closely, compared to 35% of white voters.
