US consumer sentiment falls to four‑month low in September, inflation worries persist

Washington — The latest University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers shows U.S. consumer sentiment has slipped to a four‑month low in September. The final Consumer Sentiment Index reading for the month was 48.1, down from 51.7 in August. While the figure improved slightly from a preliminary 47.8, it still reflects a broader decline in confidence among American households.

Key numbers

The index is now about 15% lower than its level in January, indicating a significant erosion of optimism since the start of the year. Both current‑month and year‑ahead assessments of personal finances fell roughly 10%, according to the university’s survey.

Inflation expectations rise

Respondents expect inflation to run at 4.6% over the next year, up from 4.0% in August. Twelve‑month inflation expectations have risen from 3.4% in February, the month the US‑Israeli war with Iran began. Expectations for inflation over the next five years edged higher to 3.4% after holding steady at 3.3% for three consecutive months.

Political split

Joanne Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers, noted that sentiment has weakened across the political spectrum. “Overall, interviews reveal broad agreement across the political spectrum that the outlook for the economy has weakened since the beginning of the year,” she said. The survey found Republican sentiment is now about 20% lower than in January 2026, while Democratic sentiment is down roughly 13% over the same period.

What this means for families

For traditional families and faith‑centered households, the decline in confidence underscores the importance of prudent budgeting and careful financial planning. Rising price pressures threaten the ability of families to afford everyday necessities, from groceries to school supplies.

Administration response

The Trump administration has emphasized its commitment to curbing inflation through targeted fiscal policies and deregulation that promote competition and lower consumer costs. Officials argue that recent steps to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens and to support domestic production are intended to strengthen purchasing power for American families.

Looking ahead

Economists had forecast a reading of 47.6, so the final figure of 48.1 was slightly better than expectations. Nevertheless, the downward trend signals that households remain wary of price increases and the broader economic outlook. Market observers will watch upcoming data releases for signs that the administration’s policies are beginning to translate into more durable consumer confidence.
