City leaders from across America gathered in Louisville Thursday as a major housing bill is close to becoming law. The 21st Century Road to Housing Act is the first major federal housing package passed by Congress in more than a decade.
Affordable Housing Crisis
The new law includes several changes, including restrictions for large institutions to prevent them from bulk-purchasing single-family homes. It also expands housing choice vouchers, establishes a $200 million annual grant for local governments to update zoning codes and land-use policies, and provides funding in support of new housing development and enhancements to existing properties.
No matter whether you’re Republican or Democrat, housing doesn’t care about partisanship. Housing is needed by all Americans. And so this is a great moment that we’re going to be able to see success around affordable housing in America, said Clarence E. Anthony, CEO of National League of Cities.
President Donald Trump has not yet signed the measure, and has called it a big yawn. The bill will automatically become law on Friday unless Trump decides to veto it.
