US, China Engage in New Space Race

The United States and China are engaged in a new space race, with China demonstrating significant advancements in space technology. In the past five years, China has launched Tiangong, a modern orbital laboratory, and retrieved the first-ever soil samples from the far side of the moon.

US Response

In response, the US has pledged to build a lunar outpost of its own, with NASA aiming to land astronauts on the moon by 2028. However, the timeline has already faced delays due to engineering and technological challenges.

The US is relying on the private sector to develop and build low-cost, exploratory robotic landers. The nation is next planning to deliver a lander called Griffin, developed by Pittsburgh-based company Astrobotic Technology, to the lunar south pole in late 2026.

China’s Ambitions

China’s space ambitions are driven by its leader, Xi Jinping, who has called building the country into a space power an ‘eternal dream.’ China plans to build a permanent settlement on the moon by 2040 and has set its sights on expanding its exploration efforts beyond robotics, aiming to become only the second nation in the world to put its own citizens on the moon.

The US and China are both planning to send robotic explorers to the moon’s south pole later this year, paving the way for human explorers to follow. The region is crucial due to the presence of water ice, which can be converted into rocket fuel, breathable air, or drinking water, vital for sustaining an extraterrestrial settlement.
