UNM Police Move into New Headquarters to Boost Campus Safety

Albuquerque – University of New Mexico officials celebrated the opening of a new police headquarters on Tuesday, a project designed to strengthen campus safety and enhance the visibility of UNM Police officers.

Modern facilities for a modern campus

The new building, located at the corner of University Boulevard NE and Mesa Vista Road NE, features a cutting‑edge dispatch center, updated public spaces, and amenities that support officer preparedness. “This new building provides UNM police with the tools they need to do their jobs well,” said UNM President Steve Goldstein during the ribbon‑cutting ceremony.

Safety upgrades complement broader campus efforts

The headquarters is the latest component of a series of safety measures the university has implemented in recent months. In addition to the new facility, UNM has rolled out the UNM Safe app, which allows students and staff to quickly report concerns, and has expanded lighting across campus to deter crime and improve nighttime navigation.

Community impact

University police leadership expects the new headquarters to serve not only the campus but also the surrounding Albuquerque neighborhoods. Increased police visibility is intended to foster a sense of security for students, faculty, staff, and local residents who live and work near the university.

Local officials praised the project as a positive investment in public safety infrastructure. “A modern police facility helps us respond more efficiently and reassures the community that we are committed to protecting our students and neighbors,” said Albuquerque City Council member Maria Gonzales, who attended the opening.

Looking ahead

UNM Police plans to leverage the advanced technology in the new headquarters to improve response times and coordination with city law‑enforcement agencies. The department also intends to host community outreach events in the new public spaces, encouraging dialogue between officers and the public.

As the university continues to grow, the upgraded headquarters positions UNM Police to meet future safety challenges while upholding the values of a safe, family‑friendly learning environment.
