University of Michigan Board of Regents appoints C. Cybele Raver as 17th president

The University of Michigan Board of Regents announced Tuesday that C. Cybele Raver will become the institution’s 17th president. The board voted unanimously to confirm the appointment, which had been disclosed as a finalist on Aug. 18.

Raver’s background and transition

Raver joins the university from Vanderbilt University, where she serves as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. She will relocate to Ann Arbor and assume the presidency on Dec. 1. Until that date, current president Domenico Grasso will continue in an interim capacity, working alongside Raver to ensure a smooth hand‑over.

Context of the selection

The decision follows the withdrawal of former nominee Kent Syverud, who stepped aside after a brain‑cancer diagnosis in April. Syverud, a law professor and special advisor to the board, remains active in the university community despite his inability to take the top job.

Board Chair insert name if available praised Raver’s academic leadership, noting her experience in research, teaching, and institutional development. The unanimous vote reflects broad confidence that Raver’s vision aligns with the university’s mission to advance knowledge, serve the state of Michigan, and uphold the values of a public research institution.

What this means for Ann Arbor and Michigan

Raver’s appointment is expected to influence the university’s strategic priorities, including expanding research initiatives, strengthening community partnerships, and enhancing student success programs. As the university is a major economic engine for Ann Arbor and the surrounding region, her leadership will have ripple effects on local businesses, housing, and cultural life.

Stakeholders—including faculty, students, and local residents—have expressed optimism that Raver’s background in academic affairs will foster collaboration across disciplines and reinforce the university’s role as a public good.

Next steps

Raver will begin her tenure on Dec. 1, with an introductory address to the campus community scheduled for early December. The Board of Regents will continue to oversee the transition, ensuring that ongoing projects and initiatives remain on track.

The University of Michigan remains a cornerstone of higher education in the state, and the board’s unanimous endorsement of Raver underscores a commitment to stable, forward‑looking governance.
