Universal Studios Hollywood is taking steps to address noise complaints from nearby residents regarding its new Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster. The park is installing two additional sound barriers to minimize the noise disturbance.
Noise Complaints and Mitigation Efforts
The coaster, which is the largest outdoor coaster built at Universal Hollywood, has been the subject of noise complaints since testing began with actual riders. Residents of the Toluca Lake neighborhood have reported that the noise is ‘extremely disturbing’ and ‘sounds like bloody murder.’ However, a video recorded by Ethan Becker, a former Theme Park Tribune contributor, appears to show that the coaster sounds are barely audible in the Toluca Lake area.
According to an Instagram post from Los Angeles City Councilman Adrian Nazarian, the construction of the new sound barriers is expected to be completed by early next month. While the ride’s technical rehearsals have allowed some guests to ride, another delay may push the official opening of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift past its original summer schedule.
