United Flight Diverts to Wisconsin After Passenger Attempts Cockpit Breach

A United Airlines flight en route from Chicago to Minneapolis was forced to divert to Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday night due to a security concern involving an unruly passenger. The incident unfolded on United flight 2005 when a passenger made several attempts to breach the cockpit, according to air traffic control audio reviewed by CNN.

Incident Details

The passenger’s actions prompted law enforcement officers on board to restrain him, ensuring the safety of the 147 passengers and six crew members. Upon landing safely in Madison, the individual was detained by local authorities, as confirmed by FBI spokesperson Caroline Clancy.

Mike Rundle, a fellow passenger, described the tense situation, noting that the man was seen near the cockpit and appeared to reach for a flight attendant before being subdued by other passengers. The crew communicated with ground controllers at Dane County Regional Airport, indicating that law enforcement officers on the flight had the situation under control.

Response and Investigation

After the plane diverted, additional law enforcement boarded the aircraft to escort the man off. The FBI, along with local law enforcement, responded promptly to the incident. Although the passenger’s identity and potential charges remain undisclosed, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has stated that it investigates all such disturbances and can impose significant penalties for interference with airline crew members.

Signs of potential trouble were noted even before takeoff, as the passenger stood up during taxiing at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and was asked to sit down. Crew members sought assistance from Russian-speaking passengers to help communicate with the individual, who eventually complied before the flight departed.

The FAA has reported over 640 incidents of unruly passengers this year, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining safety and order during flights. The agency emphasizes its commitment to pursuing legal action against those who threaten or interfere with flight operations.
