United Airlines announced Tuesday that it expects a sufficient delivery schedule for Airbus A321XLR aircraft to support a major European expansion slated for the summer of 2027. The Chicago‑based carrier will use the long‑range, single‑aisle jet on five new routes, including Luxembourg, Ibiza, Spain, and Toulouse, France.
Largest international growth in United’s history
The new services are part of United’s biggest international expansion ever, adding ten new cities across Europe and Asia. Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances Patrick Quayle acknowledged early‑stage challenges with the A321XLR program but expressed confidence that the airline will have the needed aircraft to operate the schedule.
“We feel confident that we will have the number of aircraft needed in order to operate the schedule,” Quayle told reporters.
Fleet transition and timing
United originally ordered the A321XLR in 2019 and plans to begin international service with the type on Dec. 1, 2026, from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. The new jets will also help United retire its aging Boeing 757 fleet, with the carrier phasing out 757s as A321XLRs enter service.
Airbus has faced production and supply‑chain constraints that have delayed deliveries for some carriers, including Air Canada. United’s fleet planning remains flexible to accommodate any further delays from the manufacturer.
Strong demand for European travel
United sees continued demand for European travel well into the autumn months. Quayle noted that schedules are no longer being cut sharply after the U.S. Labor Day holiday, with the travel season extending into October or even November.
“Demand is incredibly strong,” he said, adding that United has not observed a decline in European travel this summer despite extreme heat in some regions.

The addition of the A321XLR will allow United to serve smaller markets more efficiently, expanding its presence in Europe while also supporting future growth in Asia. The airline’s strategy reflects confidence in sustained traveler interest and a commitment to modernizing its fleet.
